New York City is home to some of the world’s finest restaurants. Despite living here for several years, I haven’t fully taken advantage. Particularly with steakhouses. Now it’s less likely to change anytime soon.
NBC New York is reporting that over two dozen waiters of the city’s top steakhouses have been arrested in connection with an identity theft ring. Such restaurants include Wolfgang Steak, Capital Grille and Smith and Wollensky. Allegedly, the suspects copied credit card information while processing a customer’s bill, and then transferred the data to ring leaders. Those leaders created forged credit cards, purchased expensive goods, and then sold them for cash.
The culprits managed to generate a seven figure profit before authorities cracked down. Don’t be surprised to see tax fraud charges here: Illegal income is taxable income.
